BCNEPS
The international level of electro-encephalography test recording and reporting was introduced in collaboration with a private clinic in Dhaka in April 1996 by Dr. Selina Husna Banu and her team, with a paper pen machine. Persistent transfer of technology started on the same occasion.
Our initial aim
Our initial aim was
1. To remove the inappropriate technique and insufficient reporting of the very sensitive test during the mid 90s.
2. To ensure the optimum utilization of the equipment and appropriate electro-clinical correlation.
At the inception of our activity we had to deal with the fact that a lot of children with non-epileptic events had been on long-time antiepilepsy drug (AED) treatment based on the wrong reporting of the short time EEG records. We took steps to make the things clear among the professionals through workshops, seminars, case presentations and discussion. This was not an easy job, it was possible with our senior colleagues’ support and cooperation. At the same time we trained up a good number of technicians, physicians and engineers in collaboration with different organization with the help of the Clinical Neurophysiology department of the Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and ICH London.
In 1999, we got a used, digital EEG machine donated by the GOSH, ICH London. We established the first EEG laboratory with that machine at Dhaka Shishu Hospital. During early 2000 we provided excellent service to the poor families with the donated used machine for several years. A technical collaboration was established with the “department of Biomedical Physics and Technology (BPT)” of Dhaka University and the Bangladesh Medical Physics Association (BMPA) through Dr. K. Siddique-e Rabbani, the founder and chairman of the department in 1999. Later, international biennial conferences were organized in 2015 and in 2017 by the BPT, BMPA in collaboration with BCNEPS. We have been working together and hope to maintain the collaboration.
The appropriate EEG service for infants, children and adults had been spreading through our dedicated team members within Dhaka city at different private clinics throughout the years.
In 2006 the first meeting was held with the proposal of establishing a common platform for the clinicians, technologists, technicians, physicists and engineers in order to organize the activities from a common ground. The spontaneous endeavor of the founder members was remarkable. The initial meeting place was at the Seminar room of Comfort Diagnostic Center at the top floor. The meetings used to held after office work, i.e., at 3-4 pm.
Each and every members were committed to their individual and united activity round the year from different working place in different districts.
We started the process for the formal registration, and got registered under the society registration act XXIof 1860 by the Registrar of Joint Stock companies and Firms (Reg No- S-10548 – 09)
During the same year (2006) a structured course curriculum was developed in collaboration with the department of Clinical Neurophysiology, GOSH, ICH London.
Formal assessment test for the physicians and the technicians and formal certification ceremony were introduced in 2008. The certificate was designed by Ms. Cristine Reber, GOSH, London, UK.
Dr. Matthew Pitt’s contribution: In 2008 we introduced the first workshop on Clinical Neuropysiology of Peripheral Nervous System by Dr. Matthew Pitt, head of the clinical Neurophysiology department, GOSH, ICH London. Dr. Matthew Pitt is one of the leading Pediatric Neurophysiologist of the world, provided hands on training on needle EMG, single nerve EMG and NCV with the machine he donated for the poor families of the country. In 2008 and 2010, we Organized meetings, seminars and workshop at the Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka Shishu Hospital and National Institute of Neurosciences on EEG, NCV and EMG in infants and children.
A complete laboratory with the donated equipment by CIDA and the ICH London was established at the Bangladesh Protibondhi Foundation premises in collaboration with the Dr. MR Khan Shishu Hospital and ICH, Mirpur in 2008-2009. This started providing the clinical test services, EEG, NCV, EMG, VEP, ERG and AEPs.
The service had been extended for the people in need at the remote areas of Bangladesh with a portable EEG machine donated by the CIDA in 2010.
The Epilepsy awareness program and outreach EEG services had been going on with the portable EEG machine since then. In addition, the portable EEG service is provided for the severely ill patients at the ICU at different hospitals on request. Special EEGs, i.e., prolonged sleep recording is performed for the difficult to diagnose cases and ASD and ADHD cases on admission.
The team of BCNEPS organized Workshops at the conferences organized by the BSCNDD (Bangladesh Socienty of the Child Neurology Development and Disabilities).
The BCNEPS organized five National and International conferences since 2010.
