Dr Zenobia Zaiwalla

Specialist in Sleep disorders in Children

Dr Zaiwalla trained in adult and paediatric neurology before pursuing an interest in paediatric epilepsy and paediatric neurophysiology. She was appointed Consultant in Clinical Neurophysiology at the Park Hospital in Oxford in 1991. The Park Hospital was a specialist Centre for children with complex epilepsy and neurodevelopmental disorders, including autistic spectrum disorders and ADHD; Dr Zaiwalla led this service with a neuropsychiatrist colleague. In the early 1990’s, the increase in referrals of children with sleep disorders lead to the development of combined paediatric epilepsy and sleep disorder services at the Park hospital.

With reorganisation of services in Oxford and closure of the Park Hospital, the services moved to the John Radcliffe Hospital, where Dr Zaiwalla established and led the paediatric and adult sleep disorder services, in addition to providing the regional paediatric EEG service, and continuing her interest in the diagnosis of epilepsy in children.

Dr Zaiwalla retired from the John Radcliffe Hospital in September 2018, but has returned to work part time, to support the paediatric sleep disorder service, focusing on training junior colleagues in diagnosing and management of childrens’ sleep disorders. Her expertise is in a range of sleep disorders, including in children with neurodevelopmental disorders, who have difficulty settling at bed time, or wake frequently, and or have sleep related movements or behaviours such as night terrors/ sleep walking, and children who are excessively sleepy during the day. She regularly teaches locally and nationally, and has publications in the field of sleep disorders in children.

Krishna Das

Dr Das is currently working as a Consultant Paediatric Neurologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London and at the National Centre for Young People with Epilepsy (NCYPE), Lingfield, UK.
He is also an Honorary Consultant at UCL (ICH).
He has a keen interest in teaching and is a regular faculty member of various national and international training programmes.

Specialisms
His main areas of interest are management of complex epilepsy, neurophysiology and pre-surgical evaluation. He has also been involved in several research projects in this field.

Qualifications and training
Dr Das completed his undergraduate and postgraduate medical training in India.
He then specialized in Paediatric Neurology and subsequently worked in teaching hospitals in India and Saudi Arabia.
He underwent further training in Neurophysiology and Paediatric Neurology in the UK.

Henry Houlden

Henry Houlden

His laboratory works on the genetics of neurodegeneration, peripheral nerve disease, ataxias, and paroxysmal movement disorders. He also has an interest in neurorehabilitation. The combination of genetic, functional cell biology and neuropathological methods is a particularly powerful approach for understanding neurological diseases and their pathological processes.

Given the rapid advances in genetic technology and knowledge, the analysis of RNA, protein expression and protein interactions in human tissue will become central to neurological research. It is likely that the next 10 years will see the development of treatments for human diseases based on these advances. Therefore, the collection of clinically characterized neuropathological material is pivotal to future research.

His research groups are carrying out a programme of genetic and pathological investigations into human neurodegeneration. We have recently identified two ataxia genes and we are working on a number of disease genes in ataxia, peripheral neuropathy, parkinson’s disease and dementia. These genetic and neuropathological studies integrating functional in vitro research will translate this research into disease modifying treatment for human diseases.

Role in the Synaptopathies Initiative
He is the deputy lead PI of the Synaptopathies Initiative and aim to understand mono- and polygenic inheritance with a focus on paroxysmal dyskinesias, episodic ataxias and overlap syndromes with epilepsy and migraine.

Ronit M Pressler

Ronit M Pressler

Ronit is Consultant in Clinical Neurophysiology and clinical lead of the Telemetry Unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital for children, London and Associated Professor at the UCL-Institute of Child Health. She qualified from Berlin University in 1992 and trained in paediatrics in Berlin, Germany and clinical neurophysiology at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, London, obtaining her MD in 1997 and her PhD in 2006.

Her research interests include neonatal seizures, particularly their diagnosis and treatment, as well as the effect of epilepsy on cognition and pre-surgical evaluation in children with complex epilepsy. Since 2015 she has been on the council of the British Society for Clinical Neurophysiology BSCN) and currently severs as international secretary. She is also affiliated member of the Paediatric Neuroscience Clinical Reference Group, NHS England. She has an international reputation for teaching neonatal EEG and is director of the ILAE EEG course ‘EEG in the first year of life’. She is chair of the ILAE neonatal seizure classification task force as well as co-chair of the ILAE neonatal guidelines task force.

She works as a neuroradiologist in Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in Ankara since 2000. She is chief of the neuroradiology section. She has an affiliation with Bilkent University, as an adjunct professor. She does MR research in collaboration with EEE and biomedical engineers, psychologists and people dealing with genetics & biology.
